“Vivienne,” Desmond said, peeking his head into the room from the hall. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I said with my head down, refusing to look him in the eye. “I don’t know if I can do what you need me to do.”

“You don’t have any idea how powerful you are. Do you?” he asked, crossing the space between us.

“Nope, guess not.” I choked back my tears.

He flashed me a sly smile and pushed his dark hair away from his face. “We come from a long line of powerful witches. Their power runs through all of us. Even you.”

“If you say so.” I shrugged my shoulders.

“Come. I want you to try something.” He motioned for me to stand beside him. “Try to move the pillow off the sofa.”

“And just how am I supposed to do that?” I shook my head.

“With focus.”

Focus. Oh yeah, that’s all. I shuffled my feet to stand at his side. Pressing my lips together, I gave him a nod and shook my legs and arms to relieve some of the tension in my body, the way someone might before running a marathon. Focus. I closed my eyes, took in a deep breath, and exhaled. “Here goes nothing.” I fixed my eyes on the green and yellow throw pillow sitting on the sofa near the window, but nothing happened.

“Harder. Transfer your energy to the pillow.”

Again I tried, visualizing the pillow rising up from the cushion. Still nothing happened. With a clenched jaw, I let out a heavy sigh. “Keep trying,” he said, placing a hand on my shoulder. As he did, a gentle surge of energy radiated through me. I watched in wonder as the pillow levitated from the chair.

“See? You’re doing it! Now set the pillow down on the sofa.”

That should be easy. I just have to break my concentration.

“Over there.” He pointed to the sofa on the other side of the room.

Right. Nothing was ever easy. I glanced over at the sofa, and the pillow followed my gaze. Maybe it would be easy.

“Good. Almost there,” he said, removing his hand from my shoulder.

I tried keeping my mind focused on the pillow, but my tendrils of control dissolved, and the pillow fell to the ground. Frustration boiled in my chest, and the next thing I knew, the pillow exploded, sending feathers flying all over the room. “Oops.” I chuckled.

He laughed at me. “It’s okay. It takes a lot of control and mental focus to move objects with your mind. You’ll get it.”

“I don’t know. Maybe I’m not cut out for all this.”

“You’ll get better in time.”

“But we don’t have time.”

“Did you feel how my energy helped you when I set my hand on you? Or the way Jackson’s energy helped you with the phone?” I nodded. “That’s how the circle works. Just your presence will augment our power, so don’t worry about the magic part. Besides, with some practice, you’ll do just fine.”

“If you say so.” He spoke with such confidence it was hard not to trust him.
